eBay has over 138 million monthly users. It’s a great place to find a huge range of items – whether they be brand new or pre-loved.
However, with such a high volume of goods being bought and sold, unfortunately sometimes the things you buy from eBay go missing.
If your eBay package has suddenly gone missing, it can be a real issue. So, what can you do if you think your eBay package has been stolen?

Before you start contacting resources to recover your package, you should do some digging to try and be certain that your items have fallen victim to foul play.
Obviously, unless you have security cameras or something similar at home this can be difficult. That being said, there are a few other ways you can try to track your package down.
If the seller has provided you with a tracking number, check to see if your item has been marked as delivered or if it has just been delayed in transit. If your order has been marked as delivered, but is still nowhere to be seen, try asking your neighbors (who might have taken it in for you) or double check the delivery dress you input (in case you had it sent somewhere else by mistake).
If you suspect that your package has been stolen, the first person to reach out to is the seller.
Remember, try not to take it out on them. Whilst it’s frustrating that your delivery has disappeared, it isn’t actually their fault: they packed up your item and sent it off accordingly.
To reach out to your seller, you’ll need to submit an “Item not received” request on eBay. When you do this, you can include detail such as whether you’re looking for a refund or a replacement item – and the seller has three days to respond.
The ownness will then be on the seller to provide delivery confirmation. If they can’t, or they simply don’t respond to you at all, you can then ask eBay to step in.
You can do this by logging into your account and clicking the “My eBay” link, which will take you to a summary page. There, click on “Purchase history”, locate the item in question, click “See request details,” followed by “Ask eBay to step in.”
eBay will review your case and respond within 48 hours. If eBay determines the seller is at fault, you’ll get a full refund, including shipping, within 48 hours.
If the seller can provide tracking information that confirms your package was delivered, they’re not obligated to offer any further help. That being said, a lot of sellers may go out of their way to find a resolution for you anyway, such as following up with the courier on your behalf.
If the seller isn’t able to help you out, your next step should be to contact the courier your item was sent with. Make sure you have your tracking number handy when you reach out.
It’s quite common for delivery drivers to hide a package to try and avoid porch piracy, so there may be a note on file that can help you to track your package down.
If they can’t offer you a solution, they might be able to offer some sort of compensation – depending on who the seller used.
You might be surprised to know that your stolen package might be covered by your home insurance policy.
This will vary from provider to provider – and most policies will also have an excess in place – so it will depend on the cover you have and the value of your item as to whether this is a suitable solution for you.
If dealing with porch piracy is becoming a regular occurrence for you, it might be worth reporting it to the police.
Unfortunately, it’s rare that the police will have the evidence or the resources to investigate this for you – but if package theft is a big problem in your area it can definitely help bring it to their attention and encourage them to do something about it.
