Back in the age before the internet, shopping was much more restrictive than it is now. You’d have to go to store, find the items you want and then trek back home with your purchases in tow.
Now, you can find what you want at a click of a button, and it’ll show up on your doorstep – sometimes in less than 24 hours!
So with online shopping becoming the preferred way to get what we need for most Americans, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both:
When we say traditional shopping, we mean in-person shopping. Whether you’re heading to the mall to get a new pair of shoes or the grocery store to grab stuff for dinner – if you’re travelling to the store to get your items, that’s what we’re talking about.
This is one of the biggest pros for shopping in person. When you’re in store, you can see the items you’re looking for up close and personal.
This can be especially helpful if you’re shopping for clothes or shoes, as you can try them on before you buy and make sure they’re the perfect fit. It also gives you a chance to check the quality.
When you’re shopping in person, you’ll be able to interact with people like store assistants to make sure any questions you have get answered quickly.
This might be especially helpful if you’re buying something like a high ticket tech item, where you might need a bit of extra info to make sure you’re getting the right thing.
With advances like live chat, social media and chat rooms, it is now easier for you to get this information online too. But, there’s still something to be said for good old fashioned face to face contact.
If you need to return a product to a local store, you can usually head down with your receipt and you’re good to go. Sometimes things aren’t that simple with online shopping.
However, if you’ve done some traditional shopping out of state things can be a little trickier.
When you shop in-store, you’re limited to the possibly small range of products that they carry. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you’ll have to spend time travelling to elsewhere to try and find it.
When you shop online, you don’t get the chance to shop around and compare different vendors easily.
You could travel back and forth to check if you really wanted, but who has the time!
Traditional stores have open and closing times. More often than not, if you work 9-5 yourself your only time to shop might be at the weekend.
This time restriction can be frustrating, especially if you need something quickly mid-week.
Online shops are open 24/7, that means you can browse in the middle of the night, from your bathtub if you need to!
This means it’s more convenient, and quicker, as you can use your spare time to do more important things than heading out to the mall.
Shopping online means you have a wide range of stores to compare. This means you can browse a wide range of products quickly and easily.
Even if you have to shop from different vendors, it’s much easier to switch between tabs than it is to run between different stores.
Online shopping makes it super easy to compare the same products from different vendors.
Tools like Google Shopping make it really simple to see which sites are offering better deals or discounts, meaning you can find the same product for less.
Sometimes shopping online can be dangerous. This means, if you’re not careful, you could find yourself falling for a scam.

One of the biggest pros we discussed above was the benefit of being able to see and try on certain items like clothes or shoes.
Obviously with online shopping this isn’t possible, which could be an issue if the vendor doesn’t have a clear returns policy.
One of the biggest issues online shoppers have is actually getting their package delivered to them.
From porch piracy, to items getting damaged in transit – it can be extremely annoying when a package you’ve been waiting for doesn’t show up the way you want it.
So, it would seem that the pros of online shopping are actually pretty great. It can be both more convenient and more cost effective if you’re doing it in the right way.
But, some of those cons are pretty scary… is there anything you can do to make online shopping easier?
