Well, a secure site will start with ‘HTTPS://’ as opposed to ‘HTTP://’. It’ll also typically have a little padlock just to the left of the URL address. Remember, no ‘S’ = don’t shop!
Granted, online retailers will need some information from you to get your order to you safely. Typically, this would be your name, address, email and payment details. Some might even ask for a phone number. However, an online store should never need things like your social security number or your birthday to get your package to you. A site asking for these could warrant a red flag. You should also avoid using the same password for every site, keep it unique to make sure your information is secure.
Now, don’t get us wrong – just because you’ve never heard of a store before doesn’t mean they’re bad! Supporting small businesses is important, just make sure you do your research before you buy. Checking for reviews from past shoppers will give you a good idea about store policies, product quality and customer service levels.
When you’re checking out online, think carefully about how you pay for your order. If something goes wrong, certain payment methods are better than others when it comes to getting your money back. Using PayPal or even a credit card are usually pretty safe bets. If you do need to claim a refund, if you’ve paid this way you’re likely to get your money back and quickly.
Sometimes, you can do everything right when ordering your package and things can still go wrong at the last minute. Common issues with traditional delivery services include items getting delayed, lost or even stolen. Oftentimes, if you’re not home when the delivery driver call round, they’ll leave your package out on the porch.
