Is it Better to Contact the Vendor or the Shipper About a Lost Package?

When your package goes missing, it can be really confusing trying to figure out what to do next. 

A lot of people find themselves scratching their heads over who they should contact to try and track their lost items down. Should you reach out to the courier of the package? Or are you better to go past them and straight to the person you shopped with? 

Well, there are good reasons for both, so let’s take a look at who you’d be best to contact when, and why. 

Contacting the Shipper About a Lost Package

Reaching out to the shipper of your package can be a good first step to try and figure out where your lost delivery has ended up. 

If the vendor you ordered from has provided you with some tracking information, you should always have this handy when you contact any courier. 

Reaching out to the shipper direct can be a great way to cut out the middle man – if you were to contact the vendor it would likely be the delivery company they chased up first. 

You never know, your lost package might just be hidden away at the back of a delivery truck somewhere. Or, maybe the driver tried to hide your package somewhere clever to avoid porch pirates and you just haven’t spotted it yet? 

Wherever your package has ended up, we’d always recommend getting in touch with the shipper before you contact the vendor directly. 

Reach Out to the Owner

If you’ve tried contacting the delivery service about your missing package, but haven’t had much luck, then it is now time to reach out to the person you bought the item from. 

If your package was of significant value, they’ll likely have an insurance policy in place that will help them to recover their losses and send a new item to you as soon as possible. If not, they still might have more success trying to chase down answers from the courier to find out where your delivery ended up. 

Regardless of whether they’re able to find your missing item or not, most vendors are pretty understanding when it comes to this sort of thing. It’s likely that if your delivery is truly nowhere to be found, they’ll send out a replacement or refund you what you’ve paid.
