Unfortunately, package theft is becoming ever more common. In fact, porch piracy has increased over 600% in the last decade.
Why has this started to become such a massive issue lately? Well, online shopping is at it’s peak – in fact it’s the way most Americans prefer to shop now. That means there are a lot more packages getting delivered every day – which provide more opportunity for package theft to occur.
Now, nearly half of Americans have a multiple packages stolen every year – with theft rates peaking during times like the holidays.
Unfortunately, Philadelphia is one of the places being hit the hardest. According to recent surveys, almost 1 in 5 people experience package theft in the state of Pennsylvania. That’s a very high risk when all you’re trying to do is get the stuff you’ve ordered and paid for.
Unfortunately, there’s no definitive answer for this one – package theft can happen anywhere at any time. That being said, there are certain trends that victims of package theft see quite often.
You might think that the most common time for porch pirates to strike would be at night, under the cover of darkness. But, you’d be wrong!
Most incidents of package theft happen in broad daylight. That’s because it’s when most people are out at work. If a delivery arrives for you, and you’re not home, most couriers will leave your parcel outside on your doorstep. This makes it the perfect time for an opportunistic thief to swipe in and take your package for themselves.
When it comes to location, again – it can happen anywhere. Most often it’s in residential neighbourhoods and affects those living in houses, as opposed to apartments. That’s because a lot of apartment buildings have safe places in the lobby to store packages, or even security.
Similarly to above, anyone can be a victim of package theft.
In fact, recent studies showed it impacted people of all ages: from Gen-Z right the way up to Baby Boomers.
In reality, the more often you shop online – the higher your chances are of being impacted by package theft. But, no one’s immune to having this happen to them.
A porch pirate is essentially a package thief. Think about a regular pirate, they’d sail the seas searching for other ships to ambush and steal from. A porch pirate will often canvas residential neighbourhoods in search of unattended packages. Any that they spot, will likely end up getting stolen.
Porch pirates will often target the same places regularly if they’ve had success there before. That why the amount of people having multiple deliveries stolen is so high.
Sadly, once your package has been taken the chances of getting it back are pretty slim. Even if you have security cameras capturing the crime, it’s unlikely you (or even the police) will be able to do much about it.
Instead, your best route forwards is prevention.
