So, you’re heading back to school – it’s an exciting time!
When you’re heading back to college after the summer, there are a few things you need to do to prep. Whether that’s organising your school supplies, figuring out your schedule or getting ahead of your studying – there’s a long list for you to work through.
One of the most important things to think about is how to keep your deliveries safe when you’re going to be out of the house. Theft is unfortunately extremely common when people are out of the house for an extended period of time – but the most common isn’t always the ‘breaking and entering’ type you might be imagining.
Package theft is on the rise across the US, and when you’re away from home and your deliveries are left outside for multiple days the risks are obviously higher.
But what can you do to keep your packages safe while you’re in class? Well, read on to find out.
If you already know you won’t be home when ordering something online, it might be worthwhile having them sent to an alternate location instead. Whether that’s a friend, family member or even at work – sending them somewhere else might be a great alternative.
If your order has already been placed, it might be possible to re-route your package to a different address. But, if your delivery is already in transit this might not be an option for you.
Amazon Lockers are secure package lockers where your deliveries can be stored until you can come and collect them.
Reports suggest that they do seem to be pretty safe. However, there are some restrictions.
Obviously, Amazon Lockers are reserved only for Amazon orders. This means if you’re ordering from somewhere else you’ll be a little stuck. Plus, Amazon Lockers are only designed to take certain sized packages, usually the most common and smaller size that get ordered more frequently. That means if you order something that’s too large, you’ll be out of luck. They also come at a cost, as they’re only available for Amazon Prime subscribers.
If you’re lucky enough to get on well with your neighbors, they might be the perfect solution to help to keep your deliveries safe while you’re out at class.
Asking them to keep an eye out for the delivery guy and swing by to check your porch on a regular basis will minimise the risk of your packages being left outside for lengthy periods of time. Once they’re safe and secure at your neighbor’s home, you can head over to pick them up when you’re ready.
Of course, this all depends on the relationship and trust you have with the people next door. If you don’t get along, this might not be an option for you. Plus, it’s unlikely your neighbor is going to be sat at home staring out the window all day while you’re not around – meaning your packages might still be at risk of porch piracy.
