What to Do if Your FedEx Package is Lost or Stolen?

FedEx is one of the most used couriers in the States. In fact, the delivery giant handles over 19 million packages EVERY DAY. 

So, with numbers like that, it’s no surprise that sometimes your FedEx delivery might not go quite as smoothly as planned. 

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what you can do if the FedEx package you’re expecting hasn’t shown up yet. 

How to Track Your FedEx Package

FedEx offers a range of tracking options so you can keep an eye on your package’s journey. 

Depending on the type of delivery you’re expecting, you’ll likely receive a Tracking ID, reference number, transportation control number and/or a door tag number. But what are all these for? 

Well, the easiest way to check up on a FedEx delivery is to start with the official FedEx website. Navigate to the ‘Tracking’ tab, type in your tracking number and hit ‘Track’. The next screen should give you a status update so you have a better idea of what’s happening with your package. You can also do this through the official FedEx Mobile app. 

If you’re looking for another way to track your delivery down, you can also send your door tag number to ‘48773’, or call (800) 463-3339 (but make sure you have your order information to hand!). 

What Does My FedEx Delivery Status Mean? 

FedEx provides a wide variety of different delivery statuses, but some of them aren’t always very clear. Understanding what your delivery status actually means can be key to figuring out where your package is, when it might arrive or what the hold up might be. Let’s take a look at some of the most common delivery statuses FedEx provides: 

In Transit 

‘In transit’ means your package is still being transported to you. That could mean it’s in the delivery vehicle as we speak, or even that it’s at your local post office. 

Out For Delivery 

If your package is marked as ‘Out for delivery’, this means that your courier has scanned your package and it’s all prepped to be dropped off at your home. 

No Scheduled Delivery Date at this Time 

This one can mean a few things. It may be that your package hasn’t yet arrived with FedEx, so they can’t give you an estimate, or that your package has encountered some sort of unexpected delay. 

Delivery Exception 

If your package has been marked as ‘Delivery exception’, this means FedEx have run into some sort of problem. Common issues that can cause this include custom delays, missing documentation, incomplete addresses, inaccessible mailboxes or even holiday closures. 

Delivered 

This one may seem pretty straight forward – according to FedEx your package has been delivered to your shipping address. 

But, what happens when you get home and it’s not there? 

What to Do if Your FedEx Package is Missing? 

Missing packages are extremely frustrating, especially with porch piracy being on the rise. So, what should you do if your ‘Delivered’ package is nowhere to be found? 

Check the Shipping Address 

If you’ve recently moved house, or you’ve delivered items elsewhere in the past, you might have accidentally selected the wrong delivery address when you checked out. 

Make sure you double check the address you used to place your order. If it has gone to the wrong place, it’s time to try and contact someone at the location to see if your package has turned up. 

Check for Hiding Spots 

Sometimes, to try and keep your package safe, a courier might put your delivery in a location that’s hard to spot. 

Make sure you check around your property to see if your FedEx driver might have stashed your delivery somewhere that’s hidden from potential thieves. 

Ask Your Neighbors 

If your package is missing, your first port of call should be to check with your nearby neighbors. The delivery driver might have dropped it with them by accident, or asked them to accept it on your behalf if you weren’t home. 

Try and Find Security Footage 

If you, or your neighbors, have security cameras (or maybe a smart doorbell) you could check the footage to see what happened. You might find where your package was hidden, or maybe even if it was stolen. Either way, it will give you an insight into what happened after it left the courier. 

How to Claim for a Missing FedEx Package 

Thankfully, if your package hasn’t turned up, you can file a claim. As long as it is within nine-months of your package being shipped, you should be able to do this relatively easily online. You can also do this for packages that arrive damaged, or with missing contents. 

Before you start, make sure you have your FedEx tracking number as well as supporting documents.

Once you’re ready to file your claim, navigate to the FedEx claims site and enter your package’s tracking number in the box provided.

Select the type of claim you’re making, before clicking “Continue”. On the next page your should find a “Claim Details” section. Here you should add in the details of what items haven’t been delivered. 

On this page, you can also upload any supporting information. If you’re reporting a damaged package, upload photos. If you’ve got any documents that prove the item’s value you should include these too. Once you’ve added as much information as possible, hit “Continue” and add your contact information in the fields provided. 

And that’s it! Review the information you’ve provided and you’re ready to “Submit”.
