What to Do if Your Amazon Package is Lost or Stolen

Amazon has really revolutionised the way we shop. On the platform, you can order pretty much anything, from groceries to electronics, personalised gifts and more! It has never been easier to order whatever you want in just a few clicks.

But, with porch piracy on the rise, Amazon packages are going missing left and right.

There are few things worse than patiently waiting for your delivery to arrive, and then it not being there when you get home. So, what can you do if your package gets lost or stolen?

Read on to find out what you can do to try and get your package back, or to stop them from going missing ever again!

What to do if Your “Delivered” Amazon Package is Missing

If Amazon notifies you to say your package has arrived, but it’s nowhere to be seen, there are a few things you can do to try and track it down.

If you login to your Amazon account and head over to “Your Orders”, you’ll find some additional information to help you track down a stolen or missing delivery.

Check the Shipping Address

If you’ve recently moved house, or you’ve delivered items elsewhere in the past, you might have accidentally selected the wrong delivery address when you checked out.

The order details in your account will show you where your package was shipped to, so make sure you double-check you used the right one when you placed your order.

Look For an ‘Attempted Delivery’ Notice

If your delivery required a signature, and you weren’t home when the delivery guy called round, your package likely wasn’t actually delivered.

Instead, it might have been dropped off at a nearby location ready for you to pick up.

See if There’s a Delivery Photo

Sometimes, to try and keep your package safe, an Amazon delivery driver might put your delivery in a location that’s hard to spot.

They’ll also often upload a photo of your delivery to your account. If you can find a photo of where it was stashed, it might help you find it. You never know, maybe your package was never lost at all!

Try to Be Patient

Amazon drivers have been known in the past to mark a package as delivered a little bit prematurely. If your package has been marked as delivered, but you can’t find it – they might have just notified you a day or two early. Try to give it 24 – 48 hours to see if it shows up.

How to Find a Missing Amazon Package That Isn’t Trackable

Sometimes, your Amazon package might have been sent without tracking information. This isn’t very common, but it does happen, especially if you’ve purchased it from a third-party seller.

If your delivery doesn’t have a tracking number, here’s what you can do to try and find it:

Ask Your Neighbors

If your package is missing, your first port of call should be to check with your nearby neighbors. The delivery driver might have dropped it with them by accident, or asked them to accept it on your behalf if you weren’t home.

Check with the Post Office

If your package was delivered by USPS, you could try getting in touch with your local post office to see if they can help you. Most USPS delivery vehicles have GPS tracking, which means they might be able to get you some more information about where your missing package ended up.

Try and Find Security Footage

If you, or your neighbors, have security cameras (or maybe a smart doorbell) you could check the footage to see what happened. You might find where your package was hidden, or maybe even if it was stolen. Either way, it will give you an insight into what happened after it left the courier.

How to Report a Lost or Stolen Package to Amazon

If you’ve ordered directly through Amazon, you’ll be protected by Amazon’s A-to-Z Guarantee. That means you should have a pretty easy time making a claim. However, make sure you submit your report within 90-days, or you won’t be able to get any sort of refund.

Here’s how to report your missing package to Amazon:

  1. Sign in to your Amazon account and navigate to ‘Your Orders’
  2. Find the delivery you’re having an issue with and click ‘Problem with Order’
  3. You’ll see a few options to choose from, pick the one that says your item hasn’t arrived and then select ‘Request Refund’
  4. Amazon will ask you to provide additional information, add what you think is relevant and press submit

Once you’ve made a claim, you can track its progress under the Amazon Pay tab. Once your claim is approved, you’ll get a full refund to the original payment method.

If your package was delivered more than 30-days ago, you might only be able to claim a partial refund – so you should make sure you report your package as missing as soon as possible.

Reporting a Lost or Stolen Package from a Third-Party Amazon Seller

If you’ve ordered a package from a third-party seller on Amazon, and it hasn’t turned up yet, we’d recommend waiting at least 48 hours after your expected delivery date. After that, it’s time to contact Amazon.

Before you can put in a claim for a refund, you’ll need to contact the seller first. Here’s a quick step-by-step on how to report a missing package from a third-party Amazon seller:

  1. Sign in to your Amazon account and navigate to ‘Your Orders’
  2. Click on ‘Amazon Pay’
  3. Find the order that’s missing and click ‘Details’
  4. You’ll see a drop down list of suggested issues, select ‘Where’s my stuff?’
  5. Amazon will create an automated message for you to send to the seller, you can edit it if you like to add in any extra details
  6. Click ‘Send to merchant’
  7. From there, it’s up to the seller to investigate or send you a new item out. If they don’t respond within 24-hours, you can file a claim with Amazon for a refund

What to do if You Think Your Amazon Package Was Stolen

If you think your Amazon package was definitely stolen, reporting it to Amazon isn’t the only step you should take.

If this is a regular occurrence, it might be worth contacting the police so they can try and do something more to help you. You could also raise a complain directly with the shipping company, as it could be a specific driver who’s causing issues.

One extra step you can take to try and protect yourself is making sure you make any high-value purchases using a credit card. Most credit card companies offer some sort of purchase-protection, which means if your delivery is lost or stolen they’ll cover the cost.
