Porch piracy is a very real issue, and millions of dollars worth of packages are getting stolen across the US every year – 210 million last year to be exact!
Unfortunately, it’s also a problem that’s getting bigger. As online shopping becomes the preferred way for us to get what we need, delivery companies aren’t keeping up with the demand for better safety measures. That means if you’re not home when your package arrives, they’ll often leave it out on your porch – leaving it wide open to be picked up by an opportunistic thief.
That’s not the only issue online shoppers are facing. If your package is left out to face the elements, adverse weather conditions can lead to damaged or even completely ruined items.
So, with these issues becoming more prevalent, more and more solutions have come to market to help keep your packages safe.
We’ve pulled together a list of our top 5 best package theft solutions so you can decide what might work best for you.

Video doorbells have become extremely popular recently. Replacing the traditional bells, a video doorbell records the actions of whoever’s on your doorstep.
Some even have microphones and speakers, meaning you can communicate with the person at your door even if you’re not home. This can come in handy if a delivery arrives when you’re not home, as you can direct your delivery driver to place your package somewhere a bit more secure.
The issue with smart doorbells is that they don’t actually do much to protect your package from theft. These devices tend to be quite discreet, meaning they’re not likely to act as much of a deterrent against a porch pirate. Plus, whilst you might have video evidence of your package going missing, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to do much with it.
Amazon Lockers are provided for – you guessed it – Amazon packages. They’re secure package lockers where your delivery can be stored until you can come and collect it.
Reports suggest that they do seem to be pretty safe. However, there are some restrictions that come with relying on Amazon Lockers as your package theft solution.
Obviously, Amazon Lockers are reserved only for Amazon orders. This means you’re restricted to shopping with them, and no one else, if you want to use them. Plus, Amazon Lockers are only designed to take certain sized packages, usually the most common and smaller size that get ordered more frequently. That means if you order something that’s too large, you’ll be out of luck. They also come at a cost, as they’re only available for Amazon Prime subscribers.
Much like a video doorbell, a security camera can capture footage of whoever’s around your property. If you have a camera that’s clearly visible, it can also act as a deterrent for thieves – if they spot it, they may be less likely to try and steal your package.
However, they’re not completely fool proof. If a thief can be certain that you’re not home, there’s nothing to stop them from covering their face and swiping your delivery anyway. If they do, having surveillance footage of the incident isn’t going to be much comfort. It’s unlikely the police will be able to do much about it and you’re still going to have to waste time trying to get a replacement product sent out.
A delivery box is a bit like having your own personal package locker outside your home. When you order a package, you can provide specific instructions to the courier on how to access your box, and they’ll pop it in there for you when they arrive.
The only issues with them tends to come around practicality. They tend to be pretty chunky and honestly a bit of an eye sore. Plus, to get one that’s worth it’s salt they can be pretty pricey. Delivery boxes also come with size restrictions – so again if you have a larger package, or more than one delivery arriving at once, you’re right back to square one. Delivery drivers are also notorious for just ignoring them when they arrive.
At Locker Suites, we have secure and convenient package locker rooms. That means you can send all of your deliveries to us, and we’ll keep them safe for you. Any vendor that you want to buy from – regardless of who they use for shipping, the size of your package, and whether you order more than one in a day – you can have it delivered to us.
That means no more packages left out on your porch waiting to get stolen or damaged.
When you’re ready to collect, you can come down to your suite 24/7 on your schedule. Or, if you’d prefer, you can organise a concierge delivery.
