10 Things You Can Do to Protect Against Package Theft

1. Send Your Packages to Locker Suites

With Locker Suites, you get the freedom to shop from any of your favorite vendors.

With safe, secure package locker rooms in convenient, nearby locations, Locker Suites accept any package, any size from any vendor and keep them safe until you’re ready to collect them – on your time. Every Smart Suite is completely secure, and only individuals with an access code are able to enter the buildings, so you can rest assured that your deliveries won’t get stolen.

2. Have Your Packages Delivered to Work

If your biggest concern is for your packages is that they’re left out on your porch while you’re out at work, why not have them sent directly to your workplace instead.

This will make sure they land with you, meaning there’s no opportunity for porch pirates to strike. Make sure you check your company’s policies first though, as some office don’t allow for personal mail.

3. Track Your Package’s Location

Depending on what courier your vendor is using, you might be able to track your package’s whereabouts.

This means you’ll know when your delivery is due to arrive, meaning you might be able to head home to grab them or send someone over on your behalf.

4. Ask Your Neighbors to Store Them

If your package has been delivered, and there’s no way for you to get home to get it inside, you could ask your neighbor to swing by and pick it up.

If you get on well with the people next door, it’s likely they’ll be happy to help out and keep your package’s safe every once in a while.

5. Request Your Package Be Hidden

Sometimes, when you check out online you’ll be given the option to leave delivery instructions for the driver.

You could ask the courier to hide your package somewhere outside to try and make it less easy to spot, meaning it’s less likely to get stolen.

6. Deliver to an Alternate Address

If you can’t have your packages sent to work, maybe there’s somewhere else you can send it?

This could be a close friend or relative in the area who’d be happy to keep your package safe inside for you until you can swing by to collect it.

7. Request Signature Confirmation

Some delivery services offer the option to require a signature upon package delivery. This means they won’t leave it unless they’ve had you sign to say it’s been securely delivered to your hands only.

The downside is that if you’re not home, you won’t get your package at all. Instead they might have to attempt delivery on a different day, or you’ll have to go and pick it up from an alternate location.

8. Install a Security Camera

When you install a security camera, it may go some way toward keeping your packages safer.

For a potential thief, knowing that their actions are going to get caught on camera might be enough to deter them from stealing your deliveries. However, unfortunately installing a security camera doesn’t guarantee your stuff will be safe.

Someone who really wants to steal your package only needs to be resourceful enough to cover their face, meaning you’ll have a hard time discerning your thief’s identity.

Even if you do have video footage of your package being stolen – there’s not really much you can do about it.

9. Consider Motion-Sensor Lights

Some porch pirates only like to work in the cover of darkness, especially during winter months when the days are shorter.

Installing some motion-sensor lights could help with discouraging thieves like this – and keep your home more secure in general.

Of course, this isn’t a fool proof plan – as package theft is still extremely common during the day.

10. Place Security Signs

Some local security companies can provide security stickers and decals that you can place around your home to try and discourage package theft.

Some homeowners like to install these, even if they haven’t necessarily got a security system in place acting more as a deterrent than anything else.

Obviously, your best bet would be to have an actual plan in place to prevent porch piracy – as opposed to just pretending that you do!
